A Very Uke-Tide Holiday

Local non-profit is bringing musical holiday cheer to children with chronic conditions in local hospitals.

New Berlin non profit, Camp for Hematology, Oncology, Immunology and Rheumatology (CHOIR) Stars for the Creative and Performing Arts, wants to donate 100 ukuleles to children with chronic conditions who will be undergoing treatment in the Wauwatosa Children's hospital during the holiday season. The group is accepting donations of money or of actual ukuleles. They hope to get the instruments to the children by December 10th, enough time to learn carols and songs for the holiday season.

CHOIR Stars for the Creative and Performing Arts is a non profit founded by New Berlin Resident Sami Jankins. She has dealt with Immune Deficiency problems since she was 13 years old. Having been involved in the arts since a very young age, Jankins felt that it was important to help children with chronic conditions realize their creative potential. Since it was founded, the organization has won a 'Robin Hood Lionhearts' award and was a featured 'Aha Moment' at ahamoment.com.

Having set up a number of camps and classes in theater, music and written arts, CHOIR set its focus on reaching out to children who are not well enough to attend its programs or even leave the hospital. The ukulele, an instrument brought to Hawai'i by Portuguese immigrants, is relatively easy to learn and is inexpensive. Not only this, it can play any guitar song, so it is a perfect way to bring the gift of music to to children who truly need holiday cheer.

The approximate cost of a ukulele is $35 dollars and a monetary donation can be made by following the links at the organization's website: http://choirstars.org. Or, you can mail a new (please do not send used instruments) uke to:

C.H.O.I.R Stars
10240 W National Ave, PMB #1891
West Allis, WI 53227

All donations, whether monetary or the actual ukulele are tax deductible.

While the gift of a ukulele might be what turns one of these children into a future singer songwriter, the strength that they display while dealing with their conditions is what makes them stars. All it could take is a simple gift to help these children realize their creative potential.
